HAVE YOU BOOKED YOUR TICKETS FOR JACK VETTRIANO? The celebrated Scottish artist, Jack Vettriano, is to hold an open discussion at QMU. The event, which will take place on Wednesday 2 October 2013, offers a unique opportunity to meet and hear about the life and work of one of Scotland’s most well-known artists. The Fife-born artist, whose best known work is ‘The Singing Butler’, will discuss his inspirations and career development, during a question and answer session at the University. Initially starting out as a mining engineer at the age of 16, Vettriano took up art after receiving a gift of watercolours. Mainly self-taught, his art work attracted attention when he submitted two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy’s annual exhibition - both were accepted and sold on the first day. The following year, an equally enthusiastic reaction greeted the three paintings, which he entered for the prestigious Summer Exhibition at London’s Royal Academy, and his new life as an artist began. Since then there have been sell-out solo exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong and New York, and in 2004, his ‘The Singing Butler’ was sold at Sotheby’s for close to £750,000. Professor Petra Wend, Principal of QMU, said: "This is a great opportunity for our students to learn more about Jack Vettriano’s work. We are also delighted to be inviting members of the public to join us at this one-off special event.” A discussion with Jack Vettriano will take place in the Halle Lecture Theatre, QMU at 5pm on Wednesday 2 October 2013. Tickets are free but booking for this event is essential. To secure your place E: [email protected] or call T: 0131 474 0000 (and say ‘events’).
