HB 2625 by Rep. Katie Henke (R-Tulsa) and Sen. Gary Stanislawski (R-Jenks) modifies mandatory 3rd grade retention requirements by providing that a team consisting of the students parents/guardians, principal, teachers, and reading specialists determine unanimously whether or not a child is promoted to 4th grade, if the child has failed to pass the reading exam and exemptions. Further, the bill states that the exam may be given anytime from 1st-3rd grade. This bill has had widespread support since session started: it passed the House 84-6 and passed the Senate 43-1. Its now in the hands of the Speaker and Floor Leader to set this bill on the House agenda and send it on to Governor Fallin for her signature! Title is on HB 2625.
