HCHS Brier Creek Road Trip Saturday, July 20th Hampton County Historical Society will lead a road trip to Screven County, Georgia, on Saturday, July 20th, 2013. A fun, interesting day is planned! The program is free to all HC Historical Society members; donations will be accepted from non-members 9:30 am—All participants meet at the Georgia Welcome Center, located across the Savannah River on Highway 301 south of Allendale (This was the first Welcome Center in Georgia and is the oldest one operating in Georgia today). Ann Perry will give an overview of the history—and there are restrooms. Dan Johnson USC-Salkehatchie Librarian and author of “Brier Creek: A Guide to the History and Legend of a Revolutionary War Battlefield and related sites near the Savannah River” will introduce the battle at Brier Creek before leaving the Welcome Center. 10:30ish—Travel by caravan to Brier Creek battle site and/or to Brannen’s Bridge where Dan Johnson will bring the battle site alive with facts and legends. Bug spray is recommended. 12:00ish - Caravan to R & D’s Restaurant’s famous buffet for lunch. ($7.50 includes buffet, tea/water, salad & dessert). We will have our own room. Participants are responsible for their lunches. 1:00ish—Tour the Dell-Goodall House built in 1815 with Janette Tew, Brier Creek DAR docent. What a tale she has to tell. The house is located right off Highway 301 just north of R & D’s Restaurant. The Dell-Goodall House is the last stop on the tour. From there you may head on back to Hampton County OR you may drive back to Sylvania which has a wonderful historic district in which to tour and shop. The restaurant needs a number.
