HE WAS BEATEN, STONED AND SHIPWRECKED three times. Through the power of God he healed others, but he still suffered with a physical ailment God declined to heal. He was imprisoned by his own people—people he was seeking to save. Yet the apostle Paul was always thankful. Even while awaiting his execution on death row he gave thanks. So when Paul tells me that “in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18), I believe it. I don’t have anywhere near the problems Paul had, so I have no excuse to complain. In everything give thanks! In the good times and the bad. Real thankfulness is not a slave to circumstances. It’s not something the devil should be able to eclipse with a bad day. If we know Jesus, we know that God has taken our hopeless end and turned it into an endless hope!
