HEALTH WORKERS BEAT ALL OTHER PROFESSIONALS Say what you may, health workers are the most important professionals, topping all other professions. Imagine working in an environment which has 90% fatality. The health workers are not surrendering, instead, they are placing themselves on the death bed all in search of saving a life of another human being. Which other profession is that noble? Health workers deserve respect and surely, must be paid above all other professionals. Over 120 healthcare worker deaths reported during the ongoing Ebola outbreak so far, which is also the worst recorded. The disturbing feature of the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa isnt just that its the largest and deadliest: its also that so many health workers have lost their lives while caring for the sick. Since the disease is transmitted through direct exposure to bodily fluids—from vomit to blood and sweat—health-care workers are advised to wear face masks, goggles, gowns and gloves while caring for patients. A top UN envoy in Liberia, Karin Landgren, has said that at least 160 health workers have contracted Ebola and 80 have died in the epidemic. Karin Landgren called the outbreak a latter-day plague that is growing exponentially. She told the UN security council on Tuesday that most health workers have gone for long stretches without proper protective equipment, training or pay. The trouble is, health workers in the developing-country context—especially those working in some of the poorest countries on earth, where the disease emerged this time—dont always have access to this protective gear.
