HELPING OTHERS: WILLINGNESS TO ACCEPT HELP Generally, it has been my experience that trying to help others through emotional problems without their willingness is less than useless. It can even be harmful. Sometimes, when you have achieved some inner peace people will seek you out and ask for help; however, you may discover that they actually do not want help but rather a chance to vent. This is just fine. Sometimes venting is useful. If someone asks for your help and immediately rejects it or starts making excuses why they cannot follow your counsel you simply stop. You are not angry. You are not frustrated. You cannot change them without their willingness so don’t even try. Don’t say “if you would just listen to me I could fix your problem”. You can’t. Even if they seek you out and ask for counsel they owe you nothing. Help must be given freely and without expectation of reward or even gratitude. ๑ Samsaran ๑
