HENDERSON, Ky. — Five days after tasting their first defeat of the volleyball season, the Henderson County Lady Colonels returned to the win column with a vengeance on Tuesday. Taking huge early leads in all three games, they steamrolled to a 25-10, 25-3, 25-8 decision over the visiting Madisonville Lady Maroons. Last Thursday, Henderson’s girls won the first two games against Evansville Bosse, then dropped the next three and the match. Falling to 7-1, they felt they let one get away. Bringing a 1-8 record into Tuesday’s contest, the Lady Maroons seemed small threat to add a second defeat to the home team’s resume. But the Lady Colonels wanted to wipe that sour taste from their mouths with a good performance and they were better than good. “That was nice to see,” said Henderson County coach Mary Howard. “After a tough loss like that, they bounced back.” Big Alisha McBride ruled the middle of the net, totaling nine kills and three blocks. Katelyn McMillan racked up five kills as an outside hitter and delivered two aces from the service line while Jessica Cannon enjoyed a well-rounded game that included five kills and 13 assists. On the rare occasions when Madisonville’s front line asserted itself with hard spikes, Henderson’s defense dove and scrambled to return the ball. Kristin Logsdon and Azura Sinnett combined for nine digs, while others contributed with a flick of the hand or arm that kept rallies going. “They kept scrambling to keep the ball alive,” coach Howard said. “We stress that on defense so it was good to see that improvement. “ It was all offense at the start of the match, however. Game one saw Henderson open with 11 consecutive points on Meredith Proctor’s serve. The lead stood at 17-5 when Cannon stepped to the line and she promptly hammered two aces into Madisonville’s back line. McMillan finally got into the act with a cross-court power spike that pushed the lead to 20-5. Things got worst for the visitors in game two, as Henderson scored 16 consecutive points on Samantha Carter’s serve. Most of the early damage came courtesy of lady Maroons miscues but Lady Colonel front-liners culminated the stretch with five kills that pushed the lead to 17-0. Madisonville got a mini-reprieve in the third game when the Lady Colonels opened with only three consecutive points. A wayward serve made it 3-1 but then the home girls went on a 6-0 run that pushed the lead to 9-1. Just like every other game, they put this one away early. “Our serving led us to start off each of the sets,” Howard said. “We were sharp on offense and really had good team chemistry.” The jayvee team had it too, improving to 5-0 with a 21-6, 21-7 triumph. Samantha Carter contributed four kills and four aces to the assault while Addie Farley had five assists and three aces. Libbie Dockemmeyer and Mikalyla Gilbert smacked two kills apiece. Kicking off the evening’s volleyball action, Henderson’s freshman team went to 7-3 on the season with a 21-16, 21-10 win. Hannah Hobby led the way, stroking six kills and five aces. Alisha Owens chipped in with two kills and two blocks, while Ashley Collins had three kills.
