HEY, SOUTHWEST! BREAKING NEWS. Apparently some of us are fixing up our houses around here. I dunno whats worse; the fact that this is presented as news, the fact the concentrated group means FOUR in Southwest, or the fact that it is not mentioned that the only reason there is STILL a populous neighborhood here in Southwest to invest in is due to the continued investment of generations of residents descending, primarily, from diverse Immigrant and Appalachian populations that in spite of being paid low wages for highly skilled labor; masonry, taping (drywall), concrete, and other skilled labor positions, have sought to continue to improve their neighborhoods and homes while providing for their families, often times with no access, information, representation, nor direction regarding public services nor Detroit bureaucracy navigation and, often times, without access to state assistance, and not that were looking for it either. This article ask two questions. As it is written, WHY are you fixing up a house in Detroit? and WHAT has been your experience? My answers are as follows: I am fixing up a house in Detroit because my family and I live in it and my experience has been that people asking these kinds of questions seem to be surprised at my response, yet acknowledge they have the EXACT SAME RESPONSE when I ask them why they invest in THEIR house out where THEY live. There IS community here. There ARE people here. We DO live here… already. Walk into any church in Southwest on Sunday morning or afternoon and see for yourself what I mean. When am I going to see a story on that?
