HE’S the musical genius behind the Best Hip Hop Album of the Year! Senzo Vilakazi, aka “Kwesta”, scooped up the award at the Metro FM Music Awards at the big show billed as 20 Years of Beat. Last week an excited Kwesta told SunBuzz: “It feels great to be rewarded for all the hard work I’ve put into this project.” He added: “This is my first award and I hope it will open more doors for gigs. This is not just an award but a huge benefit to my brand and profile.” He said he never imagined he would win but had a lot of faith that his fans would vote for him. Said Kwesta: “My fans gave me the award and I would like to thank them wholeheartedly for that.” The 25-year-old rapper said that he learned to be humble from his parents. DaKAR is an acronym for “Da King of Afrikan Rap”, the title of Kwesta’s album which broke into the iTunes hip hop chart at number 3, behind Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP II & Drake’s Nothing Was The Same. In addition, it was voted Best Hip Hop Album at the 13th Annual Metro FM Music Awards last week. The album was the only strictly digital release to be nominated at the big show and Kwesta has now made Mzansi music history! That’s because he is the first Mzansi artist to win a major award for a work of art in pure electronic form – without having a hard copy of his album available in the shops. Fans will have to wait for the “real” album, which will only be released in the form of a disc on 28 March. In this offering, Kwesta notably includes collaborations with the likes of Jimmy Nevis, Crash Car Burn, Reason, SA Idols winner Jody Williams – no to mention the Emmy and Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir.
