HIGHER EVERYDAY FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 2013 PERVERTED PROMISE “And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her” (Matthew 14:9) The daughter of Herodias on the occasion of her birthday danced so well that her stepfather, Herod Antipas, unreservedly promised to grant her any request. Herodias, who hated John the Baptist for criticizing her remarriage to Antipas, prompted Salome to ask for John’s head. A promise is a vow or pledge to do one thing or the other for somebody. Whether our promises are for good or evil, human beings are not sovereign in nature and power. It is only God that is sovereign. Therefore the Lord Jesus admonished: “let your yea be yea and your nay, nay”. It is foolish to promise what you do not have the resources to meet. When your promise to a boy, girl or anyone is contrary to the word of God, it is a foolish promise. Now, cancel every foolish promise you have made before and repent of them. Once you realize the spiritual and physical implications of a foolish promise, the right thing is to admit your errors and apologize. To continue to carry out a foolish promise in order to impress others is to be guilty of its consequences. Challenge: Never promise what you do not have the power to grant. Prayer: Lord, help me to avoid making a foolish promise. Further Reading: John 11: 1-14
