The DA welcomes reports that the Mpumalanga Department of Health would investigate claims of rotten meat being fed to patients at the Embhuleni Hospital near Badplaas last week. However, we remain concerned over the lack of any outcomes into departmental investigations promised in the past, and whether these are only promised to keep questioners at bay. What is clear, is that public health care in Mpumalanga is in total disarray, and despite these promised probes, does not improve in the least. Of further concern is that the deterioration of health care continues regardless of premier David Mabuza’s expensive and elaborate inspection of public health facilities late last year. Nothing has come of any of his promises, and the entire exercise was aimed purely to get rid of his political opponent and former health MEC Dr Clifford Mkasi – all funded by the taxpayer. If the premier is indeed serious about improving Mpumalanga’s health care, he should take similar action with current health MEC Candith Mashego-Dlamini, and ensure that hastily-transferred HOD Richard Mnisi is called to account for his many transgressions of public finance legislation. The DA eagerly awaits the outcomes of the Human Rights Commission’s investigation into the state of health care in the province, and will continue to fight for improved health care.
