HOME SAFETY TIPS FOR SENIORS We’ve compiled some great Missouri elder care tips to help keep a senior’s home safe and hazard-free: Keep hallways, stairways, and all areas of the home well-lit Have nightlights in the bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms Clear the kitchen stove area of any flammable materials–towels, curtains, etc. Remove throw rugs or make sure they are secured to the floor Make sure uncarpeted floors aren’t slippery; don’t use high gloss polish Replace electrical cords if they are frayed or cracked. Keep them out of walking paths, but do not place under carpet or furniture, as that could be a fire hazard Set the hot water heater’s temperature to 115 or below to prevent scalding To prevent slipping in the tub or shower, use non-skid mats or slip-resistant decals Also in the tub and by the toilet, attach grab bars Check to be sure extension cords aren’t overloaded Install smoke detectors on every floor of the home Destroy old medications and those which are no longer used Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and make sure everyone in the home knows how to use it Post emergency contact numbers by all phones If using a space heater, keep away from flammable materials Turn off heating pads before going to sleep Create an emergency exit plan along with an alternative plan in case of fire Call the local fire department to obtain window decals if the older resident has a disability As always, when presenting these Missouri elder care safety tips to your older loved one, be sensitive in your approach-changes can sometimes be difficult for an older person.
