HONORING OUR INJURED SERVICE MEMBERS AT THE CHIQUITA CLASSIC IN DAVIDSON, NORTH CAROLINA The Chiquita Classic golf tourney is being played this week at River Run Country Club in Davidson, North Carolina. Notable PGA participants include: Trevor Immelman, Chad Campbell, Alex Cejka, Joe Durant, J.J. Henry, and Heath Slocum. The tournament is broadcast on the Golf Channel on Thursday from 12:30-3:30, Friday from 1:30-3:30, and Saturday and Sunday from 5:00-7:00. The Military Committee from the Chiquita Classic is playing a major role in the tournament by hosting injured U.S. service personnel from the Warrior Transition Unit at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. The Military Committee, all members of River Run Country Club, includes: John Vendley, a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and former Air Force pilot; Jack Briggman, a U.S. Air Force veteran; Lonnie Long, an Army Security Agency veteran; and Maj. Gen. Chuck Swannack, former Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne Division. The Warrior Transition Unit is comprised of wounded soldiers who have been released from the hospital and are going through a process of recovery, rehabilitation, and evaluation before returning to active duty or being medically retired. The recovering soldiers at the Classic are participating in a program developed by the On Course Foundation (oncoursefoundation) whose mission supports the recovery of injured service personnel through golf. On Course is striving to set these young men on the path toward meaningful full-time employment opportunities in the golf industry, and this week at River Run the participants have enjoyed on-course golf instruction, classes in golf course and pro-shop operations, agronomy, and tournament operation. They also played in the pro-am. The Military Committee has arranged for active-duty soldiers to carry the golf professionals bags down the 18th fairway during the pro-am and for uniformed soldiers to hold the flag on the final hole on Saturday and Sunday. It is all part of honoring and showing support for our military men and women with millions of golf fans watching on national television. The Warrior Transition Unit at Ft. Bragg will not permit us to identify the name or rank of the recovering soldiers who are participating in this weeks Chiquita Classic, but we at Unlikely Warriors want to wish them the best and thank them for their service and sacrifice.
