HOW DEEP HAVE THE BUDGET CUTS BEEN OVER THE PAST 12 YEARS? Last Day – Peace River South School District Tomorrow – Surrey School District BUDGET WATCH – TONIGHT THE CUTS MADE OVER THE PAST 12 YEARS IN THE THOMPSON KAMLOOPS SCHOOL DISTRICT The numbers below are based on an analysis prepared for the BC Court of Appeal as an Affidavit submitted by Superintendent Terence Sullivan on behalf of the Thompson Kamloops Board of Education. February 13, 2014 KEY FINDING: As a result of the 2002 cuts 53 teachers per year are not in schools that should be, schools in Thompson Kamloops have been underfunded a total of $4.56 million per year for a 12 year total of $54 million. It is the most vulnerable students that have suffered in Kamloops as a result of the 2002 cuts, with these students being without 19 Learning Assistance teachers and 3 special needs teachers as elementary and 3 counselors, 8 special needs teachers and 12 ESL(ELL) teachers every year. Returning to the numbers in the 2002 stripped contract will lead, according to the Thompson Kamloops School Board, more teachers with students, more specialist teachers, more classes, more options for students to be successful. These have all been stripped from the students over the past 12 years. bcpsea.bc.ca/publications/overview/whats-new/14-02-26/2014_BC_Court_of_Appeal_75_BCTF_v_British_Columbia.aspx
