HOW TO SELECT A SOLAR POWER SYSTEM So many people asked me about how many solar Panels is required to run my house or office, how to calculate the other parameters when decide to purchase the system. To address some of these questions I decided to write a briefing to encourage newbie to adopt the alternating energy in smart way. Solar power system usually depends of the flowing components: • Solar panel • Batteries • Charge Controller • Inverter HOW TO SELECT A SOLAR PANEL ACCORDING TO OUR REQUIREMENT? To select the solar panel we have to determine our power load first. Below is the example for further lustration. EXAMPLE: Consider that we want to run 05 Energy Saver light each of 20 watt for 03 hours and a TELEVISION 100 watt for 03 hours Number of Energy Saver = 05 Each Energy Saver is of =20 watt Need to run in a day = 03 Hours Which is = 5 * 20* 3 = 300 watt Television = 1 * 100 * 3 =300 watt Total watt usage = (energy saver ) 300 + 300(Television ) = 600 watt. It means we are going to use 600watt daily. Let us say we are going to have complete sunshine 06 hours each day . Total required watt ) 600 / 6 ( complete sunshine) = 100watt. It means we need 100 watt Solar Panel to run 05 energy saver and 01 Television for 03 hours daily. It is recommended to choose higher value than what we need. It is due to fact that practically the efficiency cannot be 100% and some of the power must be wasted during Charge process. HOW MUCH WATT A BATTERY CAN STORE? Depending on the storing capacity of the battery we can calculate which battery is suitable for our system. EXAMPLE: Let us consider that our daily consumption of power is 600 watt. (our required watt ) 600 / 12V(volt battery ) = 50 Ampere it mean that we need 50 Ah ( Ampere Hour ) to use stored energy of 600 watt . CHARGE CONTROLLER: Charge Controller will give longer life for the battery. Solar Panel normally give 15 to 18 volt , charge controller convert that to 12 -14 volt and charge battery. Charge controller prevents batteries to be over charged and can automatic disconnect battery if it is going to be empty. (we have solar panel of 100 watt ) 100 / 12 volt = 8.34 Ampere .batter to use 10 Ampere Charge Controller . INVERTER: Inverter convert DC volt to AC . in the Example our required watt is 150 but I recommend to buy minimum 500 watt inverter .
