HOW to make a SEAWEED HOME SPA using the seaweeds you find at the beach: Seaweeds raise your metabolism, they give you energy and they make your hair and skin soft and shiny. If you have psoriasis, eczema, acne, shingles, cold sores, athletes foot, inflammations and any manner of dermatitis, seaweeds can help to relieve and heal the skin. It works because seaweeds contain all the vitamins and minerals on Earth and they release these nutrients into the seawater as it warms up where our skin is designed to absorb them straight into our bloodstream. So, the original Seaweed Spa Bath was a sun-warmed rock-pool. However, if like me, you’re a bit nervous about bathing in a sun-warmed rock-pool in case something’s hiding in there with nippers, you can gather three special kinds of seaweeds and take them home for your very own Seaweed Home Spa. YOU WILL NEED: 1 pair of Scissors 1 basket 1 walking stick 3 Seaweeds: KELP, CARRAGEEN MOSS, BLADDERWRACK 1 TIDE timetable 1 Great British ocean or Channel 2 soft, clean, fluffy towels 1 DO NOT DISTURB sign At the edges of most beaches you’ll find the rocky areas. Go at low tide, being aware that the tide heights change with the phases of the moon and you want to get the furthest out you can and you can do this at the new moon and the full moon (these are called “spring tides” but don’t have anything to do with “Spring” the season). The skin on your feet is the most absorbent skin on your body so you are meant to walk barefoot to absorb the goodness from the ground. Slowly walking barefoot on seaweed feels like velvet and it grounds you deeply, the walking sticking helping to balance you. Once you’ve made it out to the edge of the sea you could be back in time, 4,000 years ago, when we were all wild and barefoot, when our only ruler was Nature – the FAIREST of them all. You’re looking for KELP, thick brown and belt-like which you will find growing the furthest out. You must cut the seaweed leaving a third on the rock so that it will grow again. In this way there will ALWAYS be more for next time. You must NEVER pull it off the rock and you must NEVER use seaweed that has already broken off because this is the sea’s compost. Cut about 8 long stands of KELP, cutting off any warn-out bits on the end. Roll them up and put them in your basket. Now look for a short (2-3”) brownish/reddish seaweed that grows on the rocks and looks a bit like lungs. This is CARRAGEEN MOSS or Irish Moss. Cut about 4 good handfuls and SWISH them about in the water to make sure the little creatures are released. Now come back up to the shore where you will find long fingers of brownish seaweed with a ROUGH pod on the end. This is BLADDERWRACK. The pod contains a gel which is always cold, even on a day like today and will soothe sunburnt skin. Cut a large handful, leaving a third on the rock and SWISH it in a nearby rock-pool. Smile at how clever you are and how gorgeous you feel to be out there and doing this. Give thanks. When you get home, hang up the KELP and put the rest in cold water until the next day (because you will probably be very tired and to deal with this now maybe overwhelming). The next day, put the CARRAGEEN MOSS into a saucepan and just cover it with tap water, bring to the boil and simmer for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. It will become a green frothy gel, then let it cool. Run your bath. Put in 7 of the KELP strips. The remaining strip cut into 4” sections and place them on the side of the bath. Put the BLADDERWRACK on the side of the bath too. Place the DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door. Climb into the bath. Take the BLADDERWRACK in your hands and wet it in the warm water, squeezing it briskly and you’ll feel it’s special gel being released. Now stand up and scrub your whole body with this exfoliating and moisturising seaweed. When you’re done, sit down and take the cooled CARRAGGEEN MOSS and rub it through your hair, it will feel like thick conditioner but much more vibrant. Take the KELP strips and lay them all over your face, they will feel cool and soothing as they extract toxins and replace them with vitamins and minerals. Now lie back and completely relax. Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, was said to have been born of the “froth of the sea” but I think it was actually the froth of boiled CARRAGEEN MOSS because, as you will discover, it makes you feel and look as lovely and beautiful as a Goddess yourself. After at least 10 minutes, rinse completely. Wrap your hair and body in your soft warm towels and, once you’ve become an expert at this you will then take it one step further and go to the fridge where the pudding you made earlier out of CARRAGEEN MOSS and elderflowers and double cream, has just set. You then curl yourself up with a pudding that raises your metabolism and enjoy the final indulgement. Who could ask for anything more?
