HPD (as well as other Blaine County law enforcement agencies) is increasingly receiving complaints that Phone Scams are occurring and the callers are posing as Idaho Power Representative or Law Enforcement Officials, please use caution and make sure it is legitimate before giving any payments. The fraudulent Idaho Power Representative is claiming that the victims payment is behind and threatening to shut off the victims power, and the Law enforcement Official is claiming the victim missed Jury Duty and wants payment or a warrant will be issued. Hang-up and directly call Idaho Power if you suspect your payment might be in jeopardy and the same goes with a Jury Duty scam, hang-up and call your local police department with questions about Jury Duty. If it seems like a scam it most likely is; ask questions and make sure you are able to call the number back and do not use methods of payment that are unconventional/uncommon in the way you usually conduct your regular payments. For example if 1-800-XXX-XXXX calls you and demands money by a wire transfer or by purchasing something (Greendot Moneypack, etc.) with cash and giving them the numbers on back, it is not legitimate and tell them you are reporting them to the police and they will probably hang-up, therefore confirming your suspicions that it was a fraudulent call. Please call the respective law enforcement agency in your area with any information about these calls.
