Had a bit of a humbling experience the other night when I met a 20 something guy from SF who was shotgunning beers and chasing tail in Panama. I had pretty much written him off as a frat fck when he overheard that I was a writer and came over to ask me what I thought about his favorite books, writers and characters. I wasn´t particularily impressed when he mentioned the perpetually trendy ¨on the road¨ Charles Bukowski and Holden Caulfield . But then he proceded to have insightful things to say about all three. When he asked me what character I thought was the strongest of all that I had encountered, I was at a loss. I thought of all of my favorite but could only say, I like them rather than back up my choices. The power was cut on the island and the lights went out and the music stopped before I could answer is question. The next morning he hopped a boat and left the beach early in the morning. Now I will answer his question to the internet. I have long been impressed by the strength of Milan Kundera´s character Jaromil in ¨life is elsewhere,¨not because he is a powerful character but because he is so weak. He is led by the situation and heavily influenced from a distance by his peers. Kundera creates a main character who doesn´t have the spine to be a decent background character yet formes a masterpiece from his failure. Somewhere out there is a kid with maicured body hair and backwards wide brimmed baseball hat, this post was for him.
