Had a uniquely Floridian experience today while inline skating the Van Fleet state trail this afternoon, a close encounter with a nine foot gator. I was clipping along at a decent pace listening to Pink Floyds awesome live set Delicate sound of Thunder when the gator crawled out from some thick scrub onto the trail about fifteen feet in front of me. The length of this gator from head to tail spanned the entire width of the trail and I had know where to go, if this gator had paused for even a second or two to get a better look at me I would have run right into it or been forced to try and jump over its tail. I yelled Jesus Christ! at the top of my lungs and thankfully he kept on going and I barely missed hitting its tail by five feet or so. After completing the first leg of my workout I briefly rested and turned around to head back to the parking lot. The same gator was still there on the opposite side of the trail sunning himself on a mound of dirt and pine straw, a steady eye on me but not even budging. Wow! I was so jacked from an adrenaline rush that from the first encounter that I was barely even tired after a twenty mile skate. DB.
