Had an interesting conversation today where a comment was made to the effect that internet downloading killed the music industry. The thing is, I think some of the best music ever made has come out in the last decade, all post iPod proliferation aided by the existence of both legal and illegal music downloads. There was a day when the artist had to wait for their break to happen and for the right person to see/hear them. For radio to decide they want to play whatever fit in to their narrow spectrum of what those in power deemed popular. A day when you were a very talented Piano Man, playing in a bar and as the regular crowd shuffled in and said, Man, what are YOU doing here?? Those days are gone. Artists have many, many platforms and tools to not only make their music, but even more importantly. Ways to share it. Good music will find and audience. Always. If you ask me. While the music industry has indeed changed, no longer do a relative few get to decide what we as a collective listening audience want to hear and push out what they want to sell. So maybe the big record companies are crippled to the point where they can no longer sell CDs for $15.99 with two or three good songs and seven or eight filler songs on them. Im not sure thats a bad thing. A artist who develops a following organically can tour and sell their music and merch and grow. They dont need a record company to pit their stuff out. There is this thing called the internet. So say I. What do you all think?
