Had dinner with Norm Mineta tonight. He told me the story behind this unique cane he was using which was made out of a Louisville Slugger. During World War II, Norm and his family were interned, along with 120,000 other Japanese Americans. As a 10-year old kid who played baseball and was active in Boy Scouts, Norm loved to carry his baseball bat everywhere. Unfortunately, when the Minetas arrived at the internment camp, the U.S. military confiscated his baseball bat because it could be used as a weapon. Norms told this story hundreds of times. But recently, after he shared this part of his childhood story at a big event, a group of students in the audience decided to get this cane made, inscribed personally for Norm.
