Haider - A Cinematic Masterpiece ... Take A Bow Mr Bhardwaj! Vishal Bhardwajs filmography speaks volumes. This director, music composer and producer has entertained us with gems like Maqbool, Omkara, Kaminey, Saath Khoon Maaf, The Blue Umbrella, Makdee, Ishqiya, Dedh Ishqiya and Ek Thi Dayaan. This week we saw the release of his latest offering - Haider. This movie has been in the news for a while now. Firstly it completes Vishals Shakespearean trilogy, Shahid in and as Haider has hailed it as his most difficult role to date and it marks the return of Tabu after a dismal stint in Jai Ho. Haider also released on the same day as Hrithik Roshans Bang Bang. My expectations are high as this was my grade 12 setbook and is my favourite play by Shakepeare. Lets take a look at the movie. Haider (Shahid Kapoor) is a poetry student who is forced to return home when his father (Irrfan Khan) disappears. Haider returns to find his mother laughing with his uncle, hinting at a strong relationship between them. Ghazala (Tabu) from the onset is a tugging prop between Haider and Khurram (Kay Kay Menon). Amidst his life falling apart, his only solace is his fiancé Arshiya (Shraddha Kapoor) a journalist. Haider is hell bent on finding out what happened to his father and the clues take us through a journey where deceit is the norm and the most unlikely people have been disloyal to his father. Haider’s motive becomes revenge and does his succeed in it at all is what Haider narrates. I believe that only the mastermind Vishal Bhardwaj could have thought of giving the iconic Hamlet the art of poetry and set it in a troubled Kashmir. Haider is an expression of Vishal Bhardwajs vision. To create this it could not possibly have been an easy task but his repertoire shows he is more than capable of it and it is a delight to watch. At the onset itself you know where his characters are heading and he keeps the journey entertaining and interesting. The iconic graveyard scene is beautifully written and acted, you are bound to sit with a lump in your throat. Adding to the narrative is the superb soundtrack of the film. Yet another feather in his cap. When it comes to performances, everyone has put their heart and soul into the film. Shahid Kapoor brings out his genetic brilliance and gives an award worthy performance. Everything from Haiders vulnerability to his anger about deceit, Shahid Kapoor delivers with sincerity. Shraddha Kapoor is great. Beautiful, innocent and smooth. Tabu plays Ghazala with flair and has a haunting quality to her silence. Only Tabu could have brought alive Gertrude in Ghazala. Irrfan Khan in a few scenes role in the film, is pitch perfect. Kay Kay Menon is a class act. I loved how his demeanor shifted in the presence of different people. Earnestly loving towards Ghazala, he is genuinely venomous towards Haider and Kay Kay Menon does it with utmost brilliance. There are very few times I will ever say it, and this is one - Haider for me is a flawless and unforgetable movie. Take a bow Mr Bhardwaj, you have created a masterpiece. Haider gets the highest rating Ive given a movie ... Yes its a 10/10 for this gem.
