Hanging Aasia Bibi The Lahore High Court has upheld the death sentence of Aasia Bibi, the blasphemy accused. Qari Saleem, who had accused her was also present in the court along with a dozen molvis and called the decision a great victory for Islam. We understand that the judges of the High Court do consider their own lives more precious than that of the life of a hapless lady, hence, the death sentence. As soon as the defense lawyer files an appeal with the Supreme Court and the case is fixed, Qari Saleem and his associates would visit all the judges and tell them of the consequences as to what would happen to them if they deviated from not confirming Aasia Bibi’s capital punishment. Prior to that, the SHO registered the case without concrete evidence, for his own life was at stake. Similarly, the judge of the trial court would have received the same message in case he did not award a death penalty to the accused. After the Supreme Court confirms the death sentence, Qari Saleem and associates would contact Mamnoon Hussain, the President of the Islamic State not to grant amnesty to Aasia Bibi for the President has a family and what might happen to him and his family if he dares pardon the “criminal.” So after Aasia is hanged, Islam would win and the hapless laborer, the poorest of the poor from a remote hamlet of Punjab would lose. Bravo! Anyway the Islamic Republic should celebrate the victory of Islam once the wretched Aasia Bibi is hanged. Several of our issues, like energy crisis, economic meltdown, law and order, and tension on the borders would be resolved and our children would not get infected by polio virus once Aasia Bibi is hanged. And we would emerge respectable and victorious in the comity of nations and not as one of the most corrupt, radicalized, sponsor of terror, dishonest and untrustworthy nation in the world once Aasia Bibi is hanged. So let us expedite the process for this “great” nation of ours does not need health, education and social security. Nor do we need peace and stability. Economic progress and integration into the regional as well as at the international level is not what we aspire for. All we need is the dead body of a poor Christian lady, illiterate and ignorant who probably does not even comprehend the nature of her “crime.” A country where a third rate molvi simply accuses a poor illiterate woman that she used abusive language against someone who lived 1437 years ago and the state and society appear helpless in front of the illiterate molvi and his ilk, I and every thinking person feels ashamed to be a citizen of. A country, where of all the issues, the state and society is focused on ensuring that the noose breaks the connection between the spinal cord and brain of a poor illiterate lady and mother of five, only because she was accused, I and every thinking person feels ashamed to be a citizen of. Waseem Altaf PS: Blasphemy law is the only law in this country where accusation is all what is required. And cases are registered only on hearsay. And any mullah or an adversary can accuse anybody of insulting the prophet of Islam or his companions. Once the case is registered, the accused is doomed for none would come to his or her rescue for the society has been radicalized, progressive segments weakened and the state and its functionaries long dead.
