Hans Habe is one of several pen names for Janos Békessy an Hungarian-Austrian writer and newspaper publisher. From 1941, he held U.S. citizenship. Habe used also the pseudonyms Antonio Corte, Frank Richard, Frederick Gert, John Richler, Hans Wolfgang, Alexander Holmes and Robert Pilchowski. While creating over 18 newspapers in the American Occupation Zone of Germany in the aftermath of World War II he had time to crank out Walk In Darkness in 1948. Its an earnest and depressing narrative of a black mans struggle. Washington Roach has had it with poverty and the hate of white people in post war Harlem so he re-enlists in the army remembering Europes progressive attitudes from his time with the forces in Italy. In Bavaria he meets and falls in love with Eva with tragic results when he begins robbing from the base to feed her nylon and chocolate jones. The cover of this Beacon edition is from 1946 and deftly sums up the plot with a cover by Saul Levine. The art for this was tarted up and re-purposed for the decidedly more low brow Hitch-Hike Hussy in 1957 which apparently needed TWO scribes; Jack Woodford AND John B. Thompson to birth this opus. From the back cover: Sunny saw no reason a girl shouldnt take the same liberties as a man did. She tested her theory one night in the cab of a trailer truck, after she had tempted its husky young driver to pick her up. So delightful was the experience that thereafter Sunny seized her pleasure where she found it---on the highway or off, with friend or stranger.
