Hanukkah is a relatively minor Jewish holiday with lots of public celebration. For me its a great time to honor and enjoy all the contributions of Jewish culture, secular and religious, to world culture, and to my life personally. I grew up here in Richmond in a community that was largely Jewish. Cantor Morris Okun at Temple Beth-El was a big influence on my life long attraction to Middle Eastern modes of longing. He sent chills up my spine. And although I think of my neighbor Estelle Lipsitz all year long this is a special time to mention her.
