Happy 2015 everyone! This is Far From the Trees year, I can feel it :). So, to kick off 2015 in a fun way, have a bit of whats still known as Sweeter Than Wine. Carolines stressing about the bistros opening night, and Jonathan tries to charm her bad mood away... ‘What do you reckon to this?’ Jonathan reached out a long fingered hand and placed a green olive atop his blini, mackerel and sour cream concoction. Then, he passed it to Caroline. She felt the charge as his fingertips brushed hers. Popping it into her mouth, she tasted the saltiness of the olive against the cream, the yeast flavour of the blini and the sweet, smoky sensation of the fish counterpointing it all. ‘Not bad,’ she conceded when she’d swallowed. ‘But I think it could do with a sprinkling of fresh chives on top.’ ‘Ah, the garnish,’ Jonathan grinned. ‘But you’re right, of course.’ He passed her her glass of prosecco. ‘See. Nothing to worry about if we don’t get a chef before opening night - we’ll serve them canapes with so much Italian sparkling they won’t see straight by the end of the evening!’ ‘Don’t be so flippant,’ Caroline retorted. ‘It’s alright for you, you’re going to inherit a massive pile from your Daddy’s business whatever you spend your life doing. I chucked in my job to come here and do this. I’ve got nothing left if this fails.’ ‘Caroline,’ Jonathan said patiently. ‘Just relax, will you.’ He topped up her glass with the rest of the bottle of prosecco. ‘We’ll find a chef. It’ll all be fine. Trust me.’ Caroline couldn’t decide if she felt irritated or not by the way Jonathan stressed the second syllable of her name. And by the fact that he completely brushed aside her attempts to rile him. She couldn’t help it, sometimes; there was something about Jonathan that made her want to challenge him all the time, made her want to force him to prove to her he wasn’t just some louche layabout. What she didn’t understand was why she felt that way.
