Happy 2015 to all of Teazle Woods friends. We are looking forward - TopicsExpress

Happy 2015 to all of Teazle Woods friends. We are looking forward to another year full of ecological gems and historical revelations, and it was lovely on New Years Day to meet a big extended family out for a walk in the fresh air. I was in the wood, on a sadder note, to check up on and record the impact on the western edge of Teazle Wood after Surrey County Councils unanimous decision to grant permission for what we all thought was inappropriate waste-related development in the Green Belt - the importation of more than 125,000 tonnes of inert waste onto a Green Belt site. I admit I have personally found it hard to watch the landscape disappear under mounds of tarmac and rubble and plastic - so close to a medieval Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Roman building, and unexplored archaeologically. As Friends of Teazle Wood we objected, gaining a buffer zone of 15 metres along the edge of the wood, for ecological reasons; this already appears to have been compromised in places, so I have contacted SCC and will stay on the case to ensure the best outcome possible for wildlife along this boundary. It seems so ironic that at the same time that the sacredness of Green Belt was re-affirmed by MVDC after the scrapped Housing and Traveller Sites Plan, Mole Valley has immediately lost two Green Belt sites to housing and waste disposal. These photos are taken from the edge of Teazle Wood facing west, New Years Day 2015. Lets hope that this project is carried out as responsibly as possible within the circumstances, and that one day it becomes a haven for flora and fauna again, although I know very well that eco-systems cannot be replaced by planting a few new trees and scattering some seeds.
