Happy Autism Awareness Day everyone! I know from personal experience with my brother, Marley, that everyday life for people with autism can be confusing, frightening and overwhelming. They often find understanding and communicating with others particularly difficult, which can then leave them feeling isolated and upset. I dont personally believe enough is being done to raise awareness about these little facts which may allow people to understand (even just a fraction) what is it like to be inside the brain of a person with autism. There are over half a million people on the spectrum in the UK, so that’s one person in every 100. We cannot, therefore, afford to allow ignorance on this subject. So next time you come across a person with autism, remember that they did not choose to have this lifelong disabling condition and that they (their parents also) are doing their best. Dont judge either one. Marley is one of the brightest and most creative people I know, and its been an absolute blessing watching him grow up into an intelligent, articulate and thoughtful young man.
