Happy Birthday Chuck Berry A musical legend named Chuck On the stage often walks like a duck He was born on this day And he won’t go away In his time many chords he has struck He was born in St. Louis, Missouri Where he once faced a trial by jury In a time of depression And racial repression He had to grow up in a hurry Chuck enjoyed singing songs as a child When his manner was civil and mild But then as a teen Not unlike Charlie Sheen He was angry and easily riled After serving three years for a crime Rubbing elbows with losers and slime He resolved to make good And behave like he should So hed never do any more time Chuck got wed to his future ex-wife And he started rebuilding his life Soon he bought his own house With his newlywed spouse But they later had marital strife When the fifties arrived, so did Chuck Who saw ways he could make a good buck Rock and Roll was the rage In this new day and age So he opted to try out his luck He played all the black clubs in his town Often acting a bit like a clown But his talent and style And gregarious smile Got him plenty of local renown But later things suddenly changed He recorded and wrote and arranged A life-changing tune Which made Chuck a tycoon After he and his wife got estranged Maybellene was that seminal song And Chuck was a star before long Making records galore He was hard to ignore And was known from New York to Hong Kong Now he enters his 88th year So he’s spending more time on his rear In his stylish abode When he’s not on the road Spreading music, nostalgia and cheer
