Happy Birthday Jody Watley (born January 30). She is a very special lady to us here on Disco, Soul, Gold. Jody has supported our page since the beginning & she was the one to persuade me to write not only these editorial, but to find VTs with live or interesting recordings & she was so right in saying that so many pages, just post music without any editorial, so it makes the difference. Jody Watley made her first stage appearance at the age of 8 years old with a family friend and godfather Jackie Wilson. She got her start on the US TV dance show Soul Train at the age of 14. Jody Watley and fellow Soul Train dancer Jeffrey Daniel were selected to join Gary Mumford and become original members of the R&B/ Soul/Disco group Shalamar by show creator Don Cornelius & signed to Solar Records. Mumford was shortly replaced by Gerald Brown, and Brown himself was soon replaced by Howard Hewett, who along with, Jeffrey Daniel & Jody Watley, creating the classic line up of Shalamar, that gave them hit after hit & at one time, they were more popular in the UK than in their own counrty. In the UK their Friends album had 4 UK top 20 hits on it. In 1987 her debut album was released & she has not looked back since, even returning back to the charts in 2013 with her last single, #Nightlife. Jodys solo hits include, Looking for a New Love, Dont You Want Me 1987, Real Love 1988, Friends (featuring Eric B. & Rakim) 1989, Off the Hook 1995, The Saturday Night Experience 1999, plus many others. She has worked with the best, Masters At Work, Love to Love, the late George Duke, George Michael, Roy Ayers, Jamie Foxx & so many others. She has sung & recorded, R&B, Soul, House, Funk, Disco hits for five decades. She will release a new album in 2014 which she is currently recording. She loves the Nightlife & we love Jody.
