Happy Birthday, Mason Williams, 1938. Mason was a comedy writer for shows like the Smothers Brothers, Glen Campbell, and Saturday Night Live and did a little stand-up comedy work as well. However, he’s clearly most famous for his song, “Classical Gas” which was first released in 1968 and later with Mannheim Steamroller in 1987, both times being Gold Records. It’s about his only hit. His intention was to make a song that was “fuel for the classical guitar” and as such was called “Classical Gasoline”, but a copy writer mistakenly abbreviated it to “gas” and it stuck. When Williams thought up the title he didn’t give any consideration to the popular use, “It’s a gas, man.” Not to be confused with me – “It’s the gasman,” or “He’s passing gas, man.” Williams is also known for his plexiglass guitar which he filled with water and put fish inside. He would “play” it on TV – it was really synced to a recording, but I suppose the thing was playable a little. You’re getting the first version. youtube/watch?v=HhMuCiAe6vA
