Happy Birthday to Wes Anderson! Last night, I investigated two recent, though quite different classics, in The Sea Inside (Alejandro Amenabar, 2004; 10/10) and the documentary of the Rumble in the Jungle, When We Were Kings (Leon Gast, 1996; 10/10). In aditional to these, both Oscar winning features, I finished season one of Columbo with Blueprint for Murder (Peter Falk, 1972; 9/10), the Costa Rica with Matt Dillon episode of Fishing with John (John Lurie, 1991; 8/10), an episode of Tanner 88, called The Great Escape (Robert Altman; 9/10) and the documentary A Trip to The Sea Inside (Oskar Santos, 2005; 9/10). It was one of the best and most insightful behind-the-scenes, making-of-a-film documentary I had ever seen, placing in its 84 minutes not just the decisions by the people involved (ie., scriptwriter, cinematographer, editor, director, actors, film scorer), but the rationale behind all of those decisions, which helped me ever so much, not just as a film lover, but one who hopes to one day get involved in the process. I certainly look forward to seeing a lot more of Amenabars work. The Gast film would make a nice adjunct to the recent Soul Power documentary (Jeffrey Levy-Hinte, 2008; 9/10), which also documents the same event, but from the musical festival perspective, whereas this earlier film concentrates more significantly on the sporting event itself. My Five Stars, for cinematic excellence, were: --Actor: Javier Bardem (The Sea Inside) --Actress: Belén Rueda (The Sea Inside) --Director: Leon Gast (When We Were Kings) --Cinematography: Javier Aguirresarobe (The Sea Inside) --Soundtrack: James Brown, Big Black, The Spinners, The Crusaders, Miriam Makeba (When We Were Kings). Film Club! =)
