Happy Birthday today (June 24) to John Illsley, who first came to prominence as a founding member & bassist of acclaimed UK roots rock band, Dire Straits; they scored such successes as the 1985 US #1 single Money For Nothing, 1986 UK #2 single Walk Of Life & 1985 world wide #1 album Brothers In Arms; by the time the group disbanded in 1995, John & frontman Mark Knopfler were the only two original band members remaining; he has since maintained a low-profile solo career; his first two albums, Never Told A Soul (1984) & Glass (1988) both featured guest turns from Knopfler; he then partnered with Celtic rock group Cunla to record Live in Les Baux de Provence (2007); Beautiful You followed in 2008 & Streets Of Heaven in 2010; John is also a avid painter & owns a local pub in Hampshire, the East End Arms, listed by critics as one of The Fifty Best Pubs Around Britain…
