Happy Birthday today (Nov. 11) to Andy Partridge, who first came to prominence as the co-lead vocalist, guitarist & chief songwriter for much-loved Swindon, UK art-pop band, XTC; they scored the 1979 UK & Canadian hit Making Plans for Nigel, 1982 UK #10 single Senses Working Overtime & controversial 1986 left-field hit Dear God, but are arguably best known for their long-standing critical acclaim & rabid cult following rather than for their commercial successes; despite the bands punk-era origins, Andys early songs also drew enormous influence from the British Invasion, resulting in a taut, angular pop sound quite distinct from their contemporaries; long a reluctant live performer, he released as a solo artist the 1980 album Take Away/the Lure of Salvage & has issued extensive demo archives under his own name; Andy has also collaborated with the likes of Harold Budd, Martin Newell, Robyn Hitchcock, Terry Hall, Thomas Dolby & The Heads, among many others…
