Happy Birthday today (Oct. 8) to Scottish guitarist, bassist & vocalist Hamish Stuart, best-known for his stint (1972-82) as one of the most actively-contributing members of Scottish funk group, The Average White Band; they were one of the few white combos to cross the color line & achieve both success & credibility playing funk - their tight, fiery sound also belying their Scottish heritage; they scored a massive international hit with 1975 US #1 & UK #6 single Pick Up The Pieces taken from the US #1 AWB LP; albums Cut the Cake (1975) & Soul Searching (1976) were also big sellers, yielding further Top 40 singles; the group initially disbanded in 1982; Hamish played in Paul McCartneys touring band during the 90s & has worked with George Benson, Aretha Franklin, David Sanborn & Chaka Khan; he released his first solo album, old-style funk/soul record Sooner or Later in 1999; he toured with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band in 2006 & again in 2008; in 2007, Hamish produced & appeared as a guest vocalist on the album All About the Music by The AllStars collective…
