Happy Friday! It is a religious day, and to all those celebrating, have a great day. I must say this though, please can certain people stop selectively quoting religious texts to try and portray your holy book to be a textbook of peace and love. Most of these holy books are not. Fortunately most people simply ignore the many contradictions and bronze age barbarity enjoy life and their cultural upbringing in a joyous way. But yet again, I have just read someone quoting from the Quran: If anyone kills a person it is as if he kills all mankind..... Ive heard it on the BBC many times, it is ubiquitous and seems to have enshrined itself as the trump card in many debates about terror and violence in the name of religion, it usually goes unchallenged and the debate moves swiftly on (Google it). This quote does not seem to be quite what it is. Please take note of the whole passage (Sura 5: 32-34), this section of the Quran occurs just after the telling of the Cain and Abel story (Sura 5: 27-31). This peaceful trump card passage often quoted is not really a universal principal but a warning to the jews who reject Allah and his messenger. The passage is: On account of his deed, We decreed to the Children of Israel (Jews) that if anyone kills a person-unless in retribution for murder or spreading corruption in the land-it is as if he kills all mankind, while if any saves a life it is as if he saves the lives of all mankind. Our messengers came to them with clear signs, but many of them continued to commit excesses in the land. Those who wage war against God and his Messenger and strive to spread corruption in the land should be punished by death, crucifixion, the amputation of an alternate hand and foot, or banishment from the land: a disgrace for them in this world, and then a terrible punishment in the Hereafter, unless they repent before you overpower them-in that case bear in mind that God is forgiving and merciful. (Sura 5: 32-24) My Quran is a rather beautiful edition translated by M.A.S Abdel Haleem with the accompanying arabic text. Just saying guys!! Peace and love x
