Happy Indigenous peoples day! Im happy to see so many cities changing the name of this holiday to Indigenous peoples day. Throughout most of history if a boat showed up to your land it was a very bad thing for you and your land. Christopher Columbus wasnt the first to discover the The new world when he got lost on his way to the East Indies and landed on the island Hispaniola, which today is known as the Dominican Republic and Haiti. That is why Columbus called the natives Indians, as he thought he was in the East Indies. Do you understand why calling the Native Americans Indians is ignorant? It would be like this; Say someone a long time ago lands in Ireland, but he thinks he landed in Australia, he calls the people of Ireland Australians, and for the rest of time they are called Australians. Christopher Columbus discovering of the natives in the Americas would lead to the capture, torture, slaughter, forced conversion to Christianity, and open the slave trade of millions of natives living in the Americas. So why is this a national holiday in the US? In 1934 Columbus Day was declared a federal holiday by the Franklin Roosevelt administration, after intense lobbying from the Knights of Columbus. The Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal service organization, founded in 1882, the organization named itself after Columbus, and wanted to inject that Roman Catholics were the rock in the foundation of American life. Religious organizations have always done their best to rewrite history in their favor, and sadly they usually succeed in doing so. #columbusday
