He was taken prisoner, but the Boer commander was impressed with his bravery, so instead of killing him, he was sent to the Pretoria prison, among the worlds most carefully guarded strongholds. Leonard plotted an escape along with two other British captives. He escaped and then navigated 300 miles of hostile territory until he reached a mining town. He knocked on the door of the only Britisher and was smuggled onto a train. Leonard got his story and his reputation for daring. He continued to do the impossible for the rest of his life.
