Happy Portuguese National Day to all my Portugues friends and relatives! Portuguese National Day Statement by the Honourable Jim Karygiannis, Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt and Liberal Critic for Multiculturalism I would like to take this opportunity to extend best wishes to the Canadian Portuguese community on the occasion of Portuguese National Day. Portuguese National Day is observed on June 10th to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Portuguese literary icon, Luís Vaz de Camões, on June 10, 1580. Luís Vaz de Camões is perhaps best known for his work Os Lusiadas, an epic poem which is a tribute to Portugal’s history, especially the golden age of explorations in the 16th century. His mastery of verse has been compared to the works of Shakespeare, Homer and Virgil. Canada and Portugal established diplomatic relations in 1946. Both countries are members of various multilateral organizations including the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). More than twenty Canadian universities have international exchange agreements or research partnerships with Portuguese universities. Canada is a proud multicultural nation that embraces a wide variety of cultures and heritages. Canadians of Portuguese heritage help to foster this identity and strengthen the fabric of our society. Members of the Portuguese Diaspora in Canada have made, and continue to make, significant contributions in a number of areas including sports, business, the arts, medicine and public service. Canada has attracted, and continues to attract, people from all over the world. We will continue to work together to build our nation and enhance our international reputation. As the Liberal Critic for Multiculturalism, I look forward to our ongoing work in building a stronger Canada.
