Happy Teachers Day...Happy Belated Wesak Day.. and perhaps a belated moment of reflection for May 13. As we are somewhat in the education field, we always like to ask new joiners who their favourite teacher was as part of their introduction. Some of the new joiners would ask me about mine and it was always, Ms Evelyn. she was my primary 5 class teacher and taught me English in primary 5 and 6. She made English fun as we did a lot of drama in class. The comedy kind, where we would be rolling on the floor laughing. It was a lot more exciting than doing worksheet exercises. Recently, someone asked me which teacher inspired me to work in education or find my passion, and boy, that was a tough one to answer. Most of my teachers got me to study, develop good values and some level of awareness about the world at large. However, none of them actually got me to think about what really inspired or motivated me. Therefore, after a bit more of thinking, it then dawned on me that the teacher that inspired me to go into education was someone I never met. His name is Mr. Brumby from the Jakarta International School. He had interviewed and accepted my brother into the International Baccalaureate programme after another school had said that Dzaeman would not have passed it at all! Mr Brumbys belief in my brother when he was only 17 years old resulted in my brother getting a PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Zurich on the reforestation of Sabahs rainforest before he turns 29. One small decision or one BIG mindset, had a transformational impact. This is a shoutout to all the Malaysian teachers, Fellows, Alumni and TFM staff out there who are putting kids on a different life trajectory. It is hard, but its worth it.
