Happy Trails to You! 5 Ingredients for a Healthy Trail Mix! Trail mix is a great snack because it packs a caloric punch, and doesn’t take up a lot of space. It provides your body with calories and nutrients necessary to keep you moving giving you the energy when you need boost. All mixes are NOT created equal. You could buy a mix but making your own is much less expensive, and it is simple and takes only minutes to assemble. Make the most of this healthy snack by adding these five ingredients into your mix. 1. Almonds Almonds are full of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and muscle-building protein. Almonds are an excellent source of energy and can be included whole or sliced, but choose unsalted to avoid thirst. 2. Dark Chocolate Dark chocolate chips are a great way to add a little sugar and a healthy dose of antioxidants to the mix. A little bit of the sweet stuff helps raise lowered blood sugar levels and gives the body energy it can use right away. A little goes a long way. 3. Seeds Seeds are a great way to add variety to your trail mix while adding healthy fats and protein. Toss together unsalted shelled sunflower and pumpkin seeds. For a dose of heart protecting Omega 3 fatty acids, sprinkle in ground flax seeds, so beneficial to our hearts. 4. Unsweetened Fruits Stay true to the classics adding raisins or add dried cranberries, cherries or apples. Dried fruits provide vitamins and minerals, but also contain fructose, a natural sugar. Check ingredient labels to make sure sugar is not listed. 5. Oats Oats are high in fiber and known to help reduce cholesterol and protect the body from heart disease. If you’re making your own trail mix, toast oats in the oven on a baking sheet to cook. Flavor with a few drops of vanilla or almond extract or a sprinkle of cinnamon. Trail mix is a great snack if you pack it full of healthy ingredients and stay clear of overly sugared fruits and candies. Because it’s made to provide lots of energy (calories) in a small serving, be sure to practice moderation and portion control.
