Happy Veterans Day Weekend November 11, 2013! I am reprinting my own 11-11-2012 message Veteran’s Day 11-11-12 Where were you on 11-11-18? November 11. 1918 marked the official end of the war to end all wars - World War I. Everyone agrees America must remain secure and safe but we can not agree on society’s obligations to the warrior soldiers who have sacrificed serving our nation. For our selfish convenience we choose out of sight and out of mind their personal sacrifices of life, limbs with enduring affected mental and physical disabilities which require a lifetime of treatment and rehabilitation so that they and their families can remain full participants in our American society. America must utilize its full resources like covering prescribed medicines, physical therapy, occupational therapy, shell shock Post-traumatic stress disorder treatment, VA hospitals, LTC, ALF and the public education of the soldiers and their families. Their long term care may never end and leaving their homes often to receive treatment in VA hospitals, assisted living facilities is better than castigating these war heroes that out of despair struggle as homeless in a constant survival mode. A simplistic proposal in public education is to implement a GI Bill of rights that includes a combination of IT and public educators. Public educators, like me, can deliver instruction to these warriors allowing them to obtain diplomas, GED, occupational certification and occupational licensing. In the 1990’s, I witnessed a pioneer in online curriculum course of study education when Mr. P.B. left our staff to be a house husband and taught students online. At that time I also took classes at St Leo with home schooling pioneers which now have entire online courses of study. My point here is that giving and charity begin at home, but is it really charity when we invest in these warriors and their families? When we include these warriors they will earn lucrative incomes that pay their way making their full Social Security and Medicare insurance contributions. This path is cost efficient compared to continuing to exclude the American warrior. Americans prefer decreased dependent care to them and their families. Thank you from the two hats man.
