Happy birthday to ex-Grange Rangers goalkeeper Tommy Wright today, a truly great Ballyclarian. Tommy played for Linfield, Newcastle United, Hull City, Nottingham Forest, Reading, Manchester City, Wrexham and Bolton Wanderers and went on to coach or manager at Limavady United, Ballymena United and Shamrock Rovers. He also led St Johnstone to Scottish Cup victory last year, the clubs first major trophy. One of the highlights of Tommys playing career was his performance in Nuremberg in 1996 when Northern Ireland earned a 1–1 draw against reigning European champions, Germany in a 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification match. Tommy hadnt played an international match in over two years prior to that point and had just returned to club action, on loan at Reading, after a prolonged injury absence. Sorry for the quality of this UTV news report from the time but please watch it through to see what a magnificent goalie the big man was. Happy birthday Tommy.
