Harare Residents Urged to Brace for Weekend Water Cuts Marvellous Mhlanga-Nyahuye WASHINGTON— The Harare City Council is advising residents to store water for domestic use as it will cut off water supplies Friday until Sunday for refurbishment at the Morton Jeffrey Waterworks. Ward 13 councillor, Peter Moyo, said the local authority is expected to utilize part of the US$140 million loan obtained from China to refurbish the waterworks. I had hoped to engage with my constituents to inform them of the impending water cut offs but I was unable to obtain police clearance on time as needed under Public Order and Security Act for people to congregate, said Moyo. He said the council used traditonal means to advertise the water cuts through the radio, television and newspapers and he hoped this will be enough to prepare Harare residents for the water cuts. Residents should brace themselves for the water shutdown and should store water in containers to ensure that they have some for domestic use. We hope that we will be able to send water bowsers to some areas that traditional do have have water, said Moyo. Harare Residents’ Trust Director Precious Shumba says the water disconnections are ill-timed. The Harare City Council could have chosen a better time to do this although its a noble idea. We currently have some sporadic cases of typhoid in Budiriro and Glenview so its freightening to image what will happen following this three day water cut, said Shumba. Shumba said he is appealing to residents to store water in containers by Thursday so that they are ready for Fridays cut off. He appealed to people in areas where there are functioning boreholes to let others share their water sources so that all residents have enough water to store for domestic use, without being charged or intimidated.
