Hard to believe my Son Shane is 18 today. As the lyrics in Beautiful Boy by Lennon go life is what happens to you while your busy making other plans. I thought of this song today like I did eighteen years ago today and how blessed and lucky I was to be given the awesome responsibility of raising a Son and beautiful boy. Shane was an amazing baby born extremely early but with strong lungs and a fighting will. He was whisked away by the neonatal ICU team seconds after he was born and spent much of his first several weeks in the hospital. When he came home to stay he quickly made up for lost time not being able to eat (drink) and pretty much always had a bottle quickly earning the Bubba nickname. Now at 511 and 150 lbs soak and wet it might seem odd unless you have ever been to a Hibachi dinner with Shane or witnessed him single handedly put away an ice cream cake. Shane has always had his own way in mind and continues to make his own path today. As a parent thats something we all hope and pray for. I have no fitting words for how proud of Shane I am. I wont embarrass him by going into details but those who know Shane in school, church or at the fire department know what I mean... and of course his family. So happy birthday Bubba and remember to let me know when the Father and Son night is at the Southard FH bar! :)
