“Hardening of the categories causes art disease.” W. Eugene Smith FELLOW ARTISTS AND PHOTOGS and FANS TOO! Heres a topic... discuss. Seriously... Im curious what yall think about this. I saw this quote this morning and its inspired a questions. Conventional wisdom encourages photographers to specialize. In my photographic journey, I seem to do this less and less... images of landscapes, sports, travel, street photography, family portraits and fashion are all posted here. And Im not afraid to post a photo from an iPhone for its artistic merit (Eeek! Its not a 24 mp RAW file!?). For me, photography is a vehicle to experience life and I dont want to limit those experiences. Of course I want my work to enjoy more exposure as well. So, is a lack of specialization and categorizaion in my work to the detriment of engaging more fans and making more of an impact with my images? Its interesting to see the patterns of the posts on this page... my audience specializes. Many who like my running photographs, dont comment on landscapes. Fans of portraits dont express interest in a great travel shot, etc. But... if you specialize more to help an audience better understand you, is it at the peril of your creative vision? For example, I know my work photographing people with strobes and flash has improved all photographs I make. Landscape photography has greatly influenced how I make photos of people and sports. What say you friends!? Are you a specialist and do you feel good about that... or not?
