Harlene Quinzel was a gifted young woman who came from bad part of Gotham. And Gotham is already pretty bad all over, so... Yeah. Her father killed for not complying with the desires of a local crime boss, she was forced to make her own way from a young age. Drive and desperation in the right combination can raise a person out of where they were. A gymnastics scholarship got her into pre-law. Her keen mind and iron will got her a doctorate specializing in abnormal psychology. She studied hard and created a new image of a professional who commanded respect. Diction and dialect coaching to shed her accent. As brilliant as she is, the Joker is even more so. He saw the chinks in her armor and an opportunity for escape. He manipulated her, utilized her fascination for him and drove it into full blown obsession. You know what the breaking point was? The Joker had the crime boss who killed her father chopped up into bits and smuggled in his pinky (and identifying pinky ring) as a gift to her when he felt the time was perfect for his escape. He stripped away all her professional demeanor and all she had accomplished. He destroyed her to suit his needs. And tragically, she remained slavishly obsessed with a man who would casually toss her aside, abuse her physically and emotionally, even leave her to die, when she was no longer convenient. The Joker is not anyones friend or hero. He is a hateful psychopath who destroys indiscriminately. Harley Quinn is no role model. She is a victim and in desperate need of help.
