Have any of you heard of Ken Peters? If not, hes the trainer at Sea World San Diego who was attacked by a female Orca named Kasatka during a show in 2006. She grabbed his foot, and dragged him to the bottom of the pool twice, I believe. The reason for this, after the video Im about to post, was looked at by experts, is that Kasatka was trying to send a message to her trainers. Her baby calf was being held in a separate pool nearby, and was crying for her. (The way Orcas cry, of course). It undoubtedly was a frustrating and emotionally painful experience as a mother to be unable to attend to your child when theyre calling out for you. And Orcas, by nature, are instinctively tuned to come to the aid of their fellow Orca when they hear distress signals. I, personally, believe Kasatkas message here was, How do YOU like being held against your will in an environment youre not meant to be in? You dont like it, do you? Well...neither do I!. Her objective was not to fatally harm the trainer; she could have easily done that far more easily and in much faster time than what this 15 minute video dictates. Ken only suffered a broken foot and small puncture wounds, so she didnt even cause him much, if any, blood loss. This is a testament to my personal belief that any attack that occurs on a human by an Orca in captivity is not one of violence, but a way to send a message to the human world that they are not HAPPY at that moment, that theres something going on thats distressing them, and they need something done about it. If you havent seen the whole video, here it is; its without sound....(Im assuming perhaps the audience was freaking out a little bit before the employees made them leave the show), or for other $ea World PR crap. Anyway, this is not a happy whale, and just further proof that nless we do something to better THEIR conditions (ideally, free them to at least a SEA PEN), there WILL be more whale-human conflict. And its not fair to blame the whale; they cannot speak our language. This is the only way she knew how to make a point, by holding him against his will, just like shes being held against hers. Perhaps that was Tilikums point, as well, but it went further than it was supposed to. These are gentle creatures with people; this has been proven. When they go to these extremes, its because something is WRONG that needs to be made right. Kasatka is also a breeding whale who has had several of her calves removed from her care and sent to other SW parks in the past; she hasnt forgotten that. Orcas are dedicated mothers and family members. The experience of losing a family member is just as devastating for them as it would be for us. Anyway, heres the video: youtu.be/RhVbH2NEeLM
