Have received a few SMSes from the government viz. tracking friends and family in cyclone affected area - this must be a first - i cannot recall having received this earlier - before the event itself… Also, it was heartening to hear the government’s stated objective of “Zero Casualty” - We need to ensure that in this day and age - none of our people fall victim to a weather event …..that is known about and can be responded to. Our preparedness and response to the recent floods is Kashmir was shameful and pathetic and but for the civil society, some corporations and non-government institutions who are continuing their R&R efforts even now, and of course technology, it could have been even more horrible…. Micro-insurance schemes and boat shelters must be ‘the priority for coastal regions - it was heart wrenching to see that fishermen and women were not willing to be evacuated because they did not want to leave Rs 200,000 boats behind - they were in a sense willing to ‘take the chance’ in order to try and save their boats - which is their livelihood and only chance to any sort of a life…. Adaptation and resilience to weather events must be strengthened and invested in even as we continue to debate and bicker over climate change and a plausible response to it.
