Have you ever had one of those days when you wished if you had stayed in bed, it would have been safer? This morning I had to go to an educatonal institute to get my CRB form done, not a complicated task, but after 45 minutes and 3 copies of the same form, I almost wanted to throw myself out of the window. I use MS as my status (not a problem have been using it for years, call it what you like but this is what I want to use, full stop. The poor lady then asked me what is your married name. I replied I did not change my name, as in my tradition it is not necessary to change ones name (talk about womens liberation), hence, I am still Anjum Anwar, and was the same before I got married! She looked at me and asked but would it be better to use Miss then? No! Ms please! But this will cause problems on the form! Why? This went on for 45 minutes and the poor young lady was quite flustered, but extremely helpful. She eventually had to call the CRB people to find out what to do with me, a woman who did not change her name when she got married? Should she leave the column blank? Then I came to my office and lets not even go there! This afternoon we were asked to go to meet Sayeeda Warsi, who is a wonderful young woman, although our political conversations tends to be on a very different wave length. There I saw someone, who is considered to be a leader of a religious organization who had the courage to tell me that Oh! I do not have a problem with what you say but I have a problem with your attitude. What!? Why is it that some Muslim or Asian men have a problem with a woman who can string a few words into a reasonable sentence to challenge authority or perceived authority? I know I have an attitude, but you know what? I also know how to use it! And then a visit to a lady whose husband thinks that beating her is his right and why all the fuss! Eventually I got home, and its great to have a cup of tea, with an attitude that I am not going to give up, and all those who have an issue with this attitude of mine, well nice to have known you, good bye!
